Sri Lanka’s labour and foreign employment minister called on the Italian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Damiano Francovigh to discuss labor migration.
The central point of the talks was the renewal of the bilateral cooperation on labour migration agreement between Italy and Sri Lanka, Manusha Nanayakkara said in a statement.
“A significant development from this dialogue was the emphasis on establishing a training center. This initiative, sponsored by the Italian government, is envisioned to provide pre-departure training for Sri Lankan individuals seeking employment opportunities in Italy,” Nanayakkara said.
Sri Lanka has seen an exodus of workers to foreign countries after it plunged into an unprecedented economic crisis which forced the authorities to declare bankruptcy and sovereign debt default in April last year.
