The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has arrested five individuals suspected of conspiring to assassinate a local businessman under the alleged direction of an organized criminal based in Dubai. The arrests were made in the Horampella area of Minuwangoda, where authorities also seized live grenades and several swords.
Acting on a tip regarding an individual in possession of a firearm, CCD's Organized Crime Investigation Unit conducted a raid. While the intended suspect was not found at their residence, officers intercepted two motorcycles accompanying a suspicious vehicle during the operation.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 12 grams of the drug "ice" in the driver's possession. Additionally, two live grenades of foreign origin and two sharp weapons were discovered inside the vehicle.
Consequently, the driver and the four individuals on the motorcycles were taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the alleged plot.
Preliminary investigations revealed that these individuals had allegedly planned to assassinate a local businessman, allegedly under instructions from an organized criminal figure in Dubai.
The suspects had reportedly arrived in the area to connect with another individual for the execution of this alleged murder plot.
The five arrested suspects, aged 22, 23, 25, 39, and 56, are residents of Katuwellegama, Minuwangoda, Kimbulapitiya, and Horampella.
