The Parliament has unanimously approved a resolution to establish a select committee tasked with investigating the allegations presented in the recent video footage aired by British Channel 4.
The resolution, put forth by 20 Members of Parliament, outlines the committee's objectives, which include examining the connections between politicians and any alleged terror groups, investigating the conspiracy claims made by former Attorney General Dappula Livera, and identifying any shortcomings in preventing the attacks despite prior warnings. The Speaker will appoint the committee's Chairman and members, with a requirement to submit their report within two months.
Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, proposed that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) be allowed to nominate a committee Chairman, with an equal representation of members from both the ruling party and the opposition. Additionally, he advocated for following the proposals of the National Catholic Committee to ensure justice for the Easter Sunday attack victims in the event of a fresh investigation.
SJB MPs Niroshan Perera and Kavinda Jayawardene expressed their full opposition to the select committee and declared their intent to have no involvement with it.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized that the new select committee should not include members who have had conflicts with him, stating, "The previous select committee included individuals with whom I had conflicts."
