The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing of the Expulsion Petitions filed by Tourism Minister Harin Fernando and Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara. These petitions challenge the decision of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to remove them from their party membership.
The Supreme Court three-judge bench, consisting of Justices S. Thurairaja, Mahinda Samayawardena, and Arjuna Obeysekara, has set the date for arguments on October 12. According to Article 99 (13) (a) of the constitution, expulsion petitions must be heard by a panel of three Judges of the Supreme Court, and their determination should be made within two months from the date of filing such a petition.
In their petitions, both Ministers are seeking a declaration that they have not ceased to be Members of Parliament and that they continue to hold their positions as Members of Parliament. This case holds significant implications for their political affiliation and parliamentary status.
