The Cabinet has given its approval for the drafting of legal provisions that will allow the acceptance of medical degrees awarded by foreign universities ranked within the top 1000 internationally.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Health Minister jointly presented a Cabinet Paper, highlighting the need for legal reforms in recognizing medical degrees from foreign institutions. Their proposal received unanimous approval from the Cabinet.
The decision to enact these legal provisions stems from a comprehensive report submitted by a committee chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister. This committee was tasked with developing a national policy that outlines the standards and criteria for recognizing medical degree programs offered by globally acclaimed universities. Additionally, the committee was responsible for making recommendations for necessary amendments to the existing Medical Ordinance to better align with the contemporary requirements of the healthcare sector.
By allowing the acceptance of medical degrees from highly-ranked foreign universities, Sri Lanka aims to enhance its medical education system and provide opportunities for qualified medical professionals to contribute to the country's healthcare sector.
