The Supreme Court has ordered the state to pay Rs.1 million in compensation to former CID sub-inspector Sugath Mendis, who was arrested and interdicted along with former CID Director Shani Abeysekera.
The court found that Mendis' fundamental rights, including the right to equality and the right to occupation, were violated by the respondents.
The court also ordered retrospective salary increments, benefits, and promotions for Mendis if he has already retired from the Police Service.
Mendis had complained that he was wrongfully interdicted and denied his salary and entitlements.
The case involved allegations of planting weapons in certain premises to frame individuals. Multiple parties, including the IGP and the Attorney General, were named as respondents in the petition.
