A high-speed SUV, driven by the son of a senior police officer, struck a police traffic officer who was on duty at the Independence Avenue roundabout this evening.
Police said the speeding vehicle veered off the road, ultimately crashing into a pond at the roundabout, causing it to run over the policeman.
The injured 25-year-old police constable, resident of Walasmulla, was promptly admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries.
Hospital sources have confirmed that he has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further medical attention.
The driver of the SUV is currently in police custody pending further investigation.
