Colombo's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ruwan Wijemuni, has warned that the ongoing rainfall in the area is likely to contribute to a rise in Dengue infections.
Despite a decrease in cases last month, health officials are predicting a spike in the mosquito-borne disease.
In an effort to combat the spread of Dengue, local authorities and health organizations are working tirelessly. Dr. Wijemuni emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns, mosquito control measures, and prompt medical assistance for those affected.
The latest data from the Epidemiology Unit reveals that a total of 64,816 Dengue cases have been reported as of October 4th, 2023. The Colombo district has the highest number of infections, with 13,620 cases. Among the provinces, the Western Province leads with 31,281 reported cases.
Efforts to control the disease and eliminate potential breeding grounds have shown progress, as the number of high-risk MOH areas, where Dengue breeding sites are prevalent, has decreased to only seven.
However, it is crucial to note that despite the decline in cases, 38 fatalities have been reported since the beginning of the year. This serves as a reminder that Dengue still poses a significant threat to public health, especially with the prevailing rainy conditions.
September 2023 saw a record low in Dengue cases, with only 2,605 reported. This marks the lowest monthly count for the year, providing a glimmer of hope in the battle against the disease.
