Several countries have approached Sri Lanka with requests for toque macaque monkeys to be supplied to zoological gardens in their respective nations, Agricultural Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
Minister Amaraweera informed Parliament that the government has advised these countries to submit their requests through their respective embassies.
In response to a query posed by SJB MP Niroshan Perera, the Minister explained that the export of monkeys has been temporarily suspended due to legal challenges brought forth by animal rights organizations and activists who oppose the move.
The minister also highlighted the significant economic impact of crop damage caused by animals, including monkeys, wild boars, and peacocks, which results in annual losses exceeding Rs. 20 billion.
