Many commuters who rely on trains as their primary mode of transportation found themselves stranded at railway stations in Colombo's capital and the suburbs due to an abrupt strike initiated by the Railway Guards' Union (RGU) this evening.
At the Colombo Fort Railway Station itself, hundreds of commuters, including foreign travelers, were observed stuck, and many passengers expressed their frustration towards the railway authorities for disrupting their daily routines.
As of now, it is estimated that nearly 80 scheduled trains, including several office trains, have been canceled due to the RGU's claims that one of its members was assaulted during an internal dispute.
Reports said that at certain railway stations, commuters attempted to confront railway officials, leading to an increase in security measures at numerous stations in and around Colombo.
