The Supreme Court has granted leave to proceed with two Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions that challenge the decision by former President Maithripala Sirisena to pardon Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera.

These petitions were accepted under Article 12(1) of the constitution, which pertains to the Right of Equality.

The Centre for Policy Alternative (CPA) and Sandhya Ekneligoda, the wife of the missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, filed these petitions.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices S. Thurairaja, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Arjuna Obeysekera, has scheduled the arguments for May 6 of the following year.
