Sri Lanka Railways has announced plans to ramp up ticket inspections in order to identify and penalize commuters who are traveling without purchasing tickets.
The inspections will primarily take place at Maradana and Colombo Fort railway stations.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, ticket inspections were temporarily halted, leading to an increase in the number of passengers traveling without tickets, as revealed by the Railway Department.
In a related development, fines totaling approximately Rs. 225,000 have been collected from passengers who were found to have traveled without tickets at Maradana Railway Station since August. The fines were imposed on 72 individuals, as reported by the Railway Station Masters' Association.
Kasun Chamara, General Secretary of the association, emphasized the importance of enforcing these fines as a deterrent for those attempting to evade ticket purchases.
