Indian and Sri Lankan officials came together on Thursday (Sep 21) to sign a significant contract for the Design, Installation, Testing, and Commissioning of a Signalling system for Sri Lanka Railways.
The project, spanning 66 kilometers from Maho to Anuradhapura, aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of the railway network. The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Transport and Highways of Sri Lanka and IRCON Ltd, an Indian infrastructure company.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Dr. Bandula Gunawardane, the Minister of Transport and Highways of Sri Lanka, and Gopal Baglay, the High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka.
Notable attendees included Senthil Thondaman, the Governor of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, Siripala Gamalath, the State Minister of Highways of Sri Lanka, and senior officials from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Transport and Highways, Sri Lankan Railways, and IRCON Ltd.
The project, which is being executed under an Indian Line of Credit (LOC) of USD 318 million, comes with a price tag of USD 14.90 million. This initiative signifies the commitment of both countries to strengthen their bilateral ties and promote infrastructural development in Sri Lanka.
Once completed, the new signalling system is expected to improve the overall efficiency and reliability of Sri Lanka Railways, benefiting both passengers and the transportation sector as a whole.
