Dr. G. Wijesuriya, the Acting Deputy Director General of Health Services (DGHS), has announced plans to address the shortage of doctors by increasing the number of trainee specialist doctors.
Recognizing the importance of resolving this issue, Dr. Wijesuriya stated that instructions have been given to recruit a higher number of trainees. The training process for specialist doctors typically takes about five years, and with the increased recruitment, it is expected that the shortage will be resolved within this time frame.
In addition to the recruitment of trainee doctors, Dr. Wijesuriya also mentioned that several doctors who have pursued training abroad are expected to return within a year. This influx of returning doctors will contribute to alleviating the shortage of doctors in Sri Lanka to some extent.
Overall, these measures aim to tackle the shortage of doctors in Sri Lanka by increasing the number of specialist doctor trainees and facilitating the return of doctors who have received training abroad.
