A billion rupee project has commenced to clean up Beira Lake, with Grepo Pvt Ltd, the foreign partner of the project, already installing machinery to initiate the cleaning process.
Masasi Onsu, CEO of Grepo Pvt Ltd, shared that his company will utilize 'Nanobubble Technology' to restore Beira Lake. "By activating the bacteria present at the lake's bottom, we will eliminate carbon dioxide and methane gases, thereby purifying the water and eliminating any unpleasant odors. Although there may be a temporary odor during the initial days, it will dissipate, and the lake will become suitable for fishing once it is cleaned," he explained.
Onsu further explained that oxygen will be released into the lake from specialized machines located around it to activate the bacteria. One such machine has already been installed.
He expressed gratitude to Sri Lanka for their past support and mentioned their offer to clean up Colombo's sewerage system and recycle sewage. However, the response from Sri Lanka is pending until the completion of the Beira Lake project.
Ashu Marasinghe, Senior Presidential Advisor who negotiated with the Japanese company, stated that the project's total cost will be Rs 1 billion. He reassured that the clean-up operation will not involve the introduction of any foreign bacteria.
The pilot project is expected to be completed within six months, while the entire project is estimated to take five years. The Japanese company has expressed willingness to continue operations in Sri Lanka for a period of 20 years.
