A magnitude-6.2 offshore earthquake occurred in the Tongoy Bay off the coast of central Chile at around 20:48 Sept. 6.
The epicenter was about 48 km (30 miles) south-southwest of La Serena in Coquimbo Region.
The tremor occurred at a depth of about 41 km (26 miles), and moderate shaking was probably felt throughout central Chile and parts of west-central Argentina. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake.
It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted a tsunami warning.
