The organs heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and her eyes of a student of Kurunegala Maliyadeva Girls’ High School, Vihagana Nuwanthi, who died of a brain tumour were donated to seven patients. She was 19 years old. She had obtained 3 ‘A’ grades in this year’s A/Ls Examination.

Earlier she was admitted to the hospital as doctors discovered that there was a tumor in her brain. Doctors informed the parents that she could donate her organs to patients.
She died on March 22. The heart and lungs taken from Vihagana were transplanted to an anesthesiologist who was in critical condition due to heart and lung failure.

This is the first time that such an organ transplant surgery has been done at the same time in Sri Lanka, although the organs had been transplanted separately before.
