The Select Committee of Parliament, tasked with addressing the drug problem in Sri Lanka, recently convened to discuss the measures taken to control and eliminate this pressing issue.
Chaired by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, the committee called upon the Sri Lanka Police, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, and National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol to present their strategies for combating the drug menace in the country.
Minister Alles announced the formation of a special committee, led by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon, to specifically focus on controlling the drug problem. The Sri Lanka Police officials highlighted the steps taken to prevent large-scale drug smuggling, with support from intelligence agencies in neighboring countries.
Furthermore, representatives from the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol shared suggestions to reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption. The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board officials also informed the committee of their efforts to provide necessary treatment for individuals struggling with drug addiction.
