The water level of many reservoirs has reduced significantly

The water level at a many of reservoirs used for hydropower has reduced significantly due to the ongoing drought

 The Randenigala Reservoir’s active water level was at 9.2% of the total capacity while Moragahakanda’s water level was at 19.6%.

Water levels at the Victoria, Castlereigh, Rantembe, Maskeliya, and Bowatenna Reservoirs were at 30.4%, 37.5%, 40.9%, 41%, and 43.5% .

The Kotmale was the only tank producing hydropower with a water level of 61.1%.

.The water level of the Maduru Oya Reservoir was at 38.8% , Kantale, Minneriya, and Giritale Tanks were at 41.7%, 45.7%, and 45.9% respectively.

Water levels of Nuwarawewa, Tissawewa, and Huruluwewa were at 27.8%, 12.7%, and 12.5% respectively. The lowest water level was in the Kandalama Tank at 3.9%.

 Meanwhile Only 14% of the total electricity generation was contributed by hydropower'. Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is drawing up plans to purchase up to 100 MW of emergency power for a period of four to six months.
