Naufar Maulavi has been sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo Special Trial-at-Bar after being found guilty of four charges relating to the illegal possession of a firearm, live ammunition, detonators and other materials used in the manufacture of explosives.
The case stems from the discovery of the firearm, ammunition and explosives-related materials at the Lactowatta estate in Wanathawilluwa in 2018.
Maulavi and his co-defendant, Mohamed Ibrahim Saadiq, pleaded guilty to four charges, numbered 1, 2, 8 and 9 in the indictment.
The court imposed prison sentences totalling 48 years on each defendant. However, as the sentences are to run concurrently, both defendants will serve an effective term of 12 years of rigorous imprisonment.
