The post-mortem examination of Kavantissa, the Galgamuwa tusker regarded as one of Asia’s largest elephants, is currently underway following his death on Thursday (16).
Kavantissa was considered the largest wild elephant in Sri Lanka and had roamed the Galgamuwa area and its surrounding regions for decades, establishing the area as his territory.
The majestic tusker, known for his long tusks and imposing presence, had earned the admiration of environmentalists and wildlife photographers, who appreciated his dignified movements and magnificent appearance.
However, reports indicate that Kavantissa had been suffering severely in recent days due to an injury to one of his legs. His condition gradually deteriorated as he stopped eating and became increasingly weak.
