Water purification operations at the Ambatale and Biyagama water treatment plants have been temporarily suspended following a nationwide power outage, according to the Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB).

The Water Board has urged the public to use available water sparingly, warning that water purification and supply operations at major treatment plants may be disrupted due to the power interruption.

The nationwide power outage occurred today (17) at around 11:45 a.m. following a system instability in the electricity transmission network, according to the National System Operator (NSO).

The NSO confirmed that Sri Lanka’s power grid had experienced a total system failure and said efforts were underway to restore electricity supply across the island.

Meanwhile, the NSO has requested owners of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to disconnect their systems until further notice to support ongoing power restoration efforts.
