Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some places in the Northern, Western and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee districts, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the island today (October 16), with showers or thundershowers occurring at times in the Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western and Northern provinces and the Anuradhapura District.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.

The public has been urged to take adequate precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.

Misty conditions are also expected in some areas of the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.

Sea Conditions

The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers or thundershowers at several locations in the sea areas surrounding the island over the next 24 hours.

Winds are expected to be south-westerly or variable in direction, with speeds of 25–35 kmph.

Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Mullaitivu via Puttalam and Kankesanthurai.

These sea areas may become fairly rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas are also possible during thundershowers.

The public and those engaged in maritime activities are advised to remain alert to changing weather and sea conditions.
