A low-level atmospheric disturbance persisting over the Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka is expected to bring continued cloudy conditions and increased rainfall across the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western provinces, while showers or thundershowers are expected in other parts of the country after 1.00 p.m.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces and in the Anuradhapura District.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is also expected at some places in other parts of the island.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimise possible damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Misty conditions may develop at some locations in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.
Rough Seas Expected During Thundershowers
The atmospheric disturbance is also expected to increase rainfall over deep and shallow sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours.
Showers or thundershowers are forecast in the sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka, with winds expected to be variable in direction and reach speeds of 20–30 kmph.
Sea conditions are expected to remain slight to moderate. However, temporarily strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during periods of adverse weather.
