Showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm likely in several provinces and districts, the Department of Meteorology has forecast. The Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Uva and North-Western provinces, along with the Anuradhapura and Mannar districts, may experience heavy rainfall at some locations.

Morning showers or thundershowers are also expected at some places in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Mullaitivu districts.

Misty conditions may develop at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.

The public has been advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.

Low-pressure area expected over Bay of Bengal

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal around October 13, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Naval and fishing communities have been urged to remain alert and follow future weather forecasts and advisories issued by the department.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations in the sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours.

Winds in these areas are expected to be northeasterly or variable, with speeds ranging from 20 to 30 kmph. Sea conditions are forecast to remain slight under normal conditions.

However, temporarily strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.

Naval and fishing communities are advised to exercise caution when engaging in activities at sea.
