Showers or thundershowers are expected across most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 p.m. today (09), with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75mm likely in several areas, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The department said heavy showers are likely at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-Western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura and Mannar districts.

The public has been advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions may also occur in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, during the early hours of the morning.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations in the sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours.

Winds in these sea areas will be south-easterly or variable, with speeds ranging from 20 to 30 kmph. Sea conditions are expected to remain slight under normal conditions.

However, temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
