A cameraman attached to a private media organisation has been arrested over an alleged assault on a security officer attached to the former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s security detail outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

Police said the cameraman was arrested today (October 1) after he arrived at the Kompannavidiya Police Station to provide a statement in connection with the incident, following a summons issued yesterday (September 30).

He reportedly arrived at the police station accompanied by a lawyer.

The arrest follows an incident that occurred yesterday during court proceedings involving former President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

According to footage recorded by journalists at the scene, the cameraman allegedly struck an officer attached to the Police VIP Security Division with his camera during a confrontation outside the court premises. The footage was subsequently circulated on social media.

The security officer who sustained injuries in the incident is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Narahenpita.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
