Atmospheric conditions are becoming favorable for afternoon thundershowers in several parts of Sri Lanka from October 1, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts after 1.00 p.m.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible in some areas.
A few showers may occur in the coastal areas of the Western Province and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning, while misty conditions are expected in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the early morning hours.
The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, showers are expected in a few sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may also occur in sea areas from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the evening or night.
Southwesterly winds are expected at 20–30 kmph, with speeds occasionally increasing up to 45 kmph in sea areas from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar.
Those sea areas may be fairly rough at times, with temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas possible during thundershowers.
