Two people have been killed in a shooting incident reported in the Halpethota area of the Beddagama Police Division this morning, police said.
According to preliminary information, a group travelling in a three-wheeler was targeted by unidentified individuals who arrived in a car. The assailants reportedly opened fire with a firearm before fleeing the scene.
The three-wheeler driver died at the scene following the shooting. Two women who were travelling in the three-wheeler sustained injuries and were admitted to Beddagama and Karapitiya hospitals for treatment.
One of the injured women, who was admitted to Beddagama Hospital, subsequently died while receiving treatment.
The identities of the two deceased persons and the suspects involved in the shooting have not yet been confirmed.
Police have launched an investigation, with two teams deployed to identify and apprehend the suspect.
