The Sri Lanka Navy safely brought ashore 25 Indonesian fishermen who were rescued after their fishing trawler capsized south of Sri Lanka, following a multi-agency search and rescue operation.

The fishermen were aboard the Indonesian fishing trawler KM Garuda Jaya VI, which capsized on September 22 within the Australian Search and Rescue Region, where the crew members were initially reported to be in distress.

The merchant vessel MV Moonstone rescued all 25 fishermen from the sea and informed the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo of the incident.

Following the distress alert, MRCC Colombo coordinated with the Sri Lanka Navy to arrange for the survivors to be brought ashore. The Navy dispatched two craft to receive the fishermen from MV Moonstone and transport them to Colombo.

The 25 survivors were safely brought to the Colombo Port this evening (September 24), where they were provided with humanitarian assistance by the Navy.

The fishermen were subsequently handed over to the Indonesian Embassy in Sri Lanka for further action.
