Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department says showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces, as well as Galle and Matara districts.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is possible in some areas, while strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North Central and North-Western provinces, and Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The Department said the Deep Depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards across the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts of India.

Although the system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka, its influence is contributing to the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern parts of the country.

Meanwhile, heavy thundershowers and winds of up to 70–80 kmph are expected over affected sea areas in the Bay of Bengal. Naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into the sea area between 7°N–22°N latitude and 82°E–90°E longitude until further notice.

Sea areas from Trincomalee to Negombo and from Galle to Pottuvil are expected to be rough or very rough at times, with wind speeds reaching 55–65 kmph.

The public has been urged to take precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
