A low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, the Department of Meteorology said.
The system developed into a depression at 5:30 a.m. Sri Lanka time today (21), while located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.
According to the Meteorology Department, the depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
The system is also expected to continue moving west-northwestwards and cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast.
The strengthening system is expected to deteriorate sea conditions, with winds in areas under the Advisory category reaching 55–65 kmph at times and seas becoming rough to very rough.
In areas under the Warning category, winds could reach up to 70 kmph, accompanied by heavy thundershowers and very rough seas.
The Department has advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into the affected sea areas between 5°N and 22°N latitude and 85°E and 100°E longitude until further notice.
Those already operating in the affected areas have been advised to move away from hazardous zones and remain vigilant.
Naval and fishing communities have also been urged to closely monitor official weather forecasts and bulletins as the system develops further.
