The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has urged all multi-day fishing vessels operating in the deep-sea areas around the Andaman Islands to leave the area immediately and move to safer waters. The department said strong winds and rough sea conditions are expected in the coming days due to a low-pressure area that has developed near the Andaman Islands.
Multi-day fishing vessels operating in the Andaman Sea and northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to move away from the low-pressure area and head southwards, towards Sri Lanka.
The department also urged small-scale fishermen to closely monitor daily sea conditions and wind speeds, as the effects of the low-pressure area could also be felt in other sea areas around Sri Lanka.
However, authorities have not yet decided to suspend fishing activities across the island and said the situation is being closely monitored.
