Former Minister Ravi Karunanayake, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over an alleged corruption offence, has been released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The court issued the order after considering submissions made by CIABOC officials and lawyers appearing on behalf of the suspect.
Karunanayake had appeared before CIABOC earlier today after being summoned to provide a statement in connection with an ongoing investigation. He was questioned for several hours before being taken into custody.
The investigation concerns allegations that several individuals were recruited to the National Lotteries Board on a contract basis outside the approved recruitment procedure and were subsequently attached to the former minister’s personal staff.
Following his arrest, Karunanayake was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, which subsequently ordered his release on bail.
