Work on a new electric train network covering Colombo and its suburbs is scheduled to begin next year, with initial planning already completed, Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath said.
Speaking at a public rally in Hambantota, Senarath said the proposed service would originate from Maradana and is expected to provide commuters with a faster and more efficient public transport option.
Under the proposed system, passengers travelling from Beliatta on the Ruhunu Kumari train would be able to disembark at Panadura and continue their journey to Colombo via the new electric train network.
The Deputy Minister also outlined several other transport and infrastructure initiatives, including the expansion of Metro bus services in Colombo and surrounding areas.
He said the Metro buses are intended to improve the quality of public transport while strengthening the state transport service.
Meanwhile, construction has resumed on several stalled highway projects, including the remaining section of the Katunayake-Mirigama road, where motorists had previously faced lengthy travel times despite the relatively short distance.
Senarath also said work has commenced on the Rs. 112 billion Kurunegala-Galagedara Expressway, which he said is being funded entirely through public revenue without obtaining new loans.
