Rs. 2 M compensation paid to families of deceased prison officers

Compensation payments of Rs. 2 million each were handed over today (21) to the families of 10 prison officers who lost their lives during the recent deadly clashes at Negombo Prison.

The payments were made at Prison Headquarters under the Agrahara Insurance Scheme of the National Insurance Trust Fund (NITF).

NITF CEO Yushan Tharanga said the fund took steps to provide the compensation promptly, without waiting for all required information, considering the unexpected circumstances.

Acting Commissioner General of Prisons Prasad Hemantha Kumara said the Department of Prisons has also launched a programme to provide additional relief to the families of the deceased officers.
