Former Sri Lanka Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, have been served indictments before the Colombo High Court over alleged corruption.

The indictments were filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Following the filing of the indictments, the Colombo High Court ordered that both accused be released on bail.

The case is linked to allegations surrounding Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s recruitment into the Sri Lanka Navy and his participation in a Royal Navy Young Officers’ training course in the United Kingdom in 2006–2007.

According to allegations cited in earlier court proceedings, Karannagoda, who was Navy Commander at the time, is accused of facilitating Rajapaksa’s participation in the overseas training programme outside established procedures, allegedly causing a financial loss to the State. Rajapaksa is accused of obtaining an undue benefit from the arrangement.

CIABOC previously filed eight indictments in connection with the case.
