Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning Hollywood actress and Mine Advisory Group (MAG) ambassador Rosamund Pike is currently visiting Sri Lanka to mark a major milestone in the country’s humanitarian demining efforts the successful removal of one million landmines over the past 17 years.
During her visit, Pike has toured demining sites in the Mannar and Mullaitivu districts, where she met Tamil and Sinhala communities affected by landmines, as well as survivors of landmine accidents.
She has also participated in several landmine risk education programmes organised for schoolchildren, aimed at raising awareness of the dangers posed by unexploded mines.
As part of her visit, Pike is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and relevant officials to discuss Sri Lanka’s progress in humanitarian demining and future efforts to make the country landmine-free.
British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Andrew Patrick described Sri Lanka’s progress towards becoming a landmine-free country as an outstanding achievement.
According to reports, one million landmines have been cleared in Sri Lanka over the past 17 years. The annual number of landmine-related accidents has also fallen significantly, from around 250 to just three in 2024.
The demining efforts have further enabled nearly one million displaced people to return to their homes and rebuild their lives safely.
