According to the latest weather forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces, as well as in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over these areas.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
Several spells of showers may also occur in the North-Western Province.
Strong Winds Expected
Strong winds reaching approximately 40–50 kmph are expected at times across the North-Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces.
The public has been advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Rough and Very Rough Seas
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds over the surrounding sea areas will be westerly to south-westerly, with speeds of around 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds could increase to 60–70 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Kalpitiya and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Winds of 50–60 kmph may also occur at times in the sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Mannar via Trincomalee and Kankasanthurai, as well as from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Fishing and Naval Communities Urged to Exercise Caution
The sea areas off the coasts from Chilaw to Mannar via Kalpitiya and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to become rough or very rough at times.
Naval and fishing communities have therefore been advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
The sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Mannar via Trincomalee and Kankasanthurai, and from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, are expected to be rough at times. Those engaged in fishing and naval activities in these areas have been urged to remain vigilant.
Wave heights could increase to approximately 2.5–3.0 metres in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
Authorities have also warned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
