Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera told Parliament on Friday that Members of Parliament have not received a salary increase, clarifying that any rise in their overall benefits is due to a revision of the fuel allowance in line with current market prices.
Addressing Parliament, Jayaweera said the Government had decided to revise the fuel allowance provided to public officials entitled to the benefit following improvements in the country's economic conditions.
"The salaries of MPs have not been increased in any way. However, the fuel allowance provided to government officials entitled to this benefit was adjusted according to current fuel prices. The Government made this decision as the economic situation improved," he said.
The Deputy Minister noted that the revision applies to all eligible public officials and is not limited to Members of Parliament. He added that, as a result of the adjustment, MPs who receive the fuel allowance have also seen a corresponding increase in the benefit.
Jayaweera's remarks came amid public discussion over parliamentary allowances and remuneration.
