The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for several sea areas around Sri Lanka, forecasting showers or thundershowers at isolated locations in the sea off the coast from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds are expected to blow from the west to southwest at speeds of 30–40 km/h.
The department warned that wind speeds could increase to 60–70 km/h at times in the sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Colombo and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Meanwhile, wind speeds may reach 50–60 km/h at times in the sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Kalpitiya via Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai, and Mannar, as well as from Colombo to Matara via Galle.
Sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough in the waters from Kalpitiya to Colombo and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. As a result, the Department of Meteorology has advised the fishing and naval communities not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
In addition, the sea areas from Batticaloa to Kalpitiya via Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai, and Mannar, and from Colombo to Matara via Galle, are expected to be rough at times. Fishermen and mariners operating in these waters are urged to exercise extreme caution.
The department also noted that wave heights of approximately 2.5 to 3.0 metres are likely in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
During thundershowers, temporary strong gusty winds are expected, and sea conditions could become temporarily very rough in the affected areas.
Authorities have urged all fishing and maritime communities to remain vigilant and strictly follow the latest weather and marine advisories.
