Eleven inmates were injured after unrest erupted at New Magazine Prison near midnight yesterday, prompting prison authorities to restore order with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Police and the Police Special Task Force (STF).
Prisons Department Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said a group of inmates became unruly during the incident, which was brought under control by prison officials with the support of the police and STF personnel.
Following the disturbance, security at the prison was reinforced with the deployment of the Sri Lanka Police, the Police Special Task Force, and the armed forces.
The injured inmates were admitted to the prison hospital for treatment, while nine inmates were transferred to another prison as a precautionary measure.
