A tense situation has erupted at the Kuruwita Prison today (07), with inmates staging a protest that has disrupted activities within the facility.
According to a spokesperson for the Department of Prisons, the unrest first broke out last night (06). Prison authorities intervened promptly and managed to bring the situation under control.
However, tensions resurfaced this morning as a group of inmates resumed the protest. During the disturbance, inmates reportedly caused damage to the prison hospital within the prison premises.
Prison officials are continuing efforts to restore order and assess the extent of the damage.
