Sri Lankan javelin champion Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has reached the number one position in the world rankings for the men’s javelin throw event, marking a historic milestone in Sri Lanka’s athletics history.
Tharanga’s rise to the top of the global rankings comes after a series of outstanding performances at international competitions, establishing him among the world’s leading javelin throw athletes.
The Sri Lankan athlete delivered a record-breaking performance at the recently concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, securing the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw with an impressive throw of 89.75 metres.
Following his Commonwealth Games triumph, Tharanga accumulated 1,354 points to claim the top position in the latest world rankings.
Germany’s Julian Weber, who held the top spot previously, moved to second place with 1,348 points, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters remains in third place in the global javelin rankings.
Tharanga’s achievement marks a significant moment for Sri Lankan athletics, placing a Sri Lankan athlete at the summit of the world rankings in the men’s javelin throw event.
