Former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has been remanded until August 18 after being arrested over allegations that four employees recruited to the Office of the Senior Adviser to the President were deployed for his personal work.
The arrest was made this afternoon (5) by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption as part of an investigation into the alleged misuse of public resources.
Following his arrest, Kariyawasam was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, which ordered that he be remanded in custody until August 18 while investigations continue.
