The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red Warning for strong winds and very rough sea conditions affecting sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
The warning came into effect at 10.00 a.m. today (August 5) and will remain valid until 10.00 a.m. tomorrow (August 6).
According to the Meteorology Department, the affected sea areas are expected to experience very rough conditions at times, accompanied by strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 60–70 kmph.
In view of the hazardous conditions, the Department has strongly advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil until further notice.
Meanwhile, sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle are also expected to experience rough sea conditions, with strong gusty winds of 50–60 kmph at times.
Authorities have urged fishermen, sailors, and coastal communities to remain vigilant, follow official weather updates, and strictly adhere to safety advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology.
