The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers and thundershowers in several parts of the country today (August 5), with fairly heavy rainfall and strong winds expected in some areas.

According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over these regions throughout the day.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at several places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaittivu District after 2.00 p.m.

Strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h are also expected at times in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North Western provinces.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risks associated with temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Authorities advise residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms, and stay updated with the latest weather advisories.
