Kotmale Reservoir Spill Gates to Be Opened at 8:00 a.m.; Residents Along Mahaweli River Urged to Remain Alert

The Department of Irrigation has announced that the spill gates of the Kotmale Reservoir will be opened at around 8:00 a.m. today (05) to manage rising water levels.

According to the Irrigation Engineer in charge of the reservoir, approximately 130 cubic feet of water per second will be released into the Mahaweli River.

As a result of the increased water discharge, the Department has advised residents living in low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River, including Ulapane, Gelioya, Gampola, Peradeniya, and Katugastota, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Authorities have urged the public, particularly those residing near the riverbanks, to exercise caution and stay informed through official updates as water levels may rise following the release.
