The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the publication of the draft 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill in the Government Gazette after both received clearance from the Attorney General.
According to the Department of Government Information, the proposed 22nd Amendment is expected to pave the way for further measures to strengthen judicial independence and improve the efficiency of Sri Lanka's justice system.
The decision follows Cabinet approval granted on July 27, 2026, to prepare amendments to the Constitution and the Judicature Act with the objective of reinforcing the independence of the judiciary and expediting the disposal of the backlog of court cases.
Following that decision, the Legal Draftsman prepared the two Bills, which have now received the Attorney General's clearance.
Accordingly, the Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to publish the Bills in the Government Gazette and present them to Parliament for approval.
The proposed constitutional amendment is expected to introduce measures aimed at strengthening judicial independence while supporting reforms to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial process.
