The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to expedite the drafting of legislation to introduce house arrest as a legal alternative to remand and imprisonment for eligible suspects and convicted offenders in an effort to ease overcrowding in prisons.
The proposal, submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, seeks to direct the Legal Draftsman to finalise the proposed legislation by incorporating additional provisions identified following a review of the draft bill.
The proposed law is intended to provide courts with the legal authority to place eligible suspects and convicted offenders under house arrest instead of remanding or imprisoning them in appropriate cases.
Cabinet had earlier approved, on June 23, 2025, a proposal to further review the draft legislation prepared by the Legal Draftsman. During that review, several additional provisions were identified for inclusion in the bill.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has now authorised the Legal Draftsman to complete the drafting process on a priority basis by incorporating the additional provisions before the legislation is presented for further consideration.
